Other Characters: None now, formerly Mortimer Toynbee/Toad, Byron Orpheus
Character Name: Igor
Series: The Igor Movie (from the beginning)
Age: Adult, (25?) Old enough to have finished college and worked a few years.
Inmate/Warden: Inmate. Igor doesn't like hurting people, not really. However, he's completely steeped in the idea that ruthlessness is admirable and necessary. He may not be quite "evil" yet, but he's trying hard to get there because he's sick of feeling powerless.
More importantly, thanks to his lack of reflection, he's perfectly capable of doing questionable things like giving animals sentience and immortality.
Arrival: He was brought here by good old fashioned dragging against his will. He would have agreed if asked, but this way it's more of a surprise.
Abilities/Powers: Igor's normal enough except for an ability to master multiple scientific disciplines and technologies. He's got a good memory, good willpower, and decent enough people skills. He has reasonable stamina and is not as crippled by his deformity as it seems he should be. Sitting or standing for too long can be painful though.
Personality:
To a casual observer Igor usually comes off as vaguely cheerful, quiet and efficient. He's capable of seeming subservient when he needs to be, though he'd prefer not to and in reality he's got a healthy amount of self esteem.
Igor is a single-minded guy who runs off willpower, optimism, and complete denial. Despite being a creative genius he doesn't think deeply at all. Not about himself, the world, or the consequences of his actions. Anything that gets in the way of his ambition to be a famous scientist feels dangerous to him. It's probably because if he did stop to think he might just sink into a quicksand of sadness and futility.
That's understandable because his situation is truly miserable. Malaria, his country is not one for human rights. Igor's position makes him literally disposable. He's part of an under class of (genetically engineered? socially engineered?) hunched lab assistants all named Igor. He's quick to say he's much better looking and smarter than most of them. Privately he probably thinks of himself as the only one that deserves to be a scientist instead.
Igor is that gifted guy who's very aware how smart he is. That's what keeps him going. He can't afford not to be positive and optimistic since his only hope is getting ahead through hard work and sheer willpower. If he can only make himself recognized as the lone guy who deserves to have a better life then all his problems will be solved, he thinks.
Stopping to consider that hey, weapons kill people! And people die when they are killed! Is not something he does. He can accept all kinds of carnage and horror as long as it isn't happening where he is.
When it comes to dealing with horror up close? He's sensitive. A younger Igor couldn't even bear to hurt a lab animal by giving it a painful shot. He felt guilty about not being "evil" enough to hurt a rabbit, but he still couldn't quite force himself. Never mind that he was fine with giving it immortality and sentience and that he ruined a perfectly good bunny by giving it depression.
He's a dad/big brother figure to his two "failed" experiments, Brain and Scamper. He hides them from his master and generally takes care of them. After Brain destroys his chances of getting into the science fair, Igor's axe-crazy reaction towards his "child" emphasizes just how much the fair meant to him and how much repressed anger he's sitting on. The chase only lasts a few seconds before Igor gives into grief but it is fairly disturbing.
He has a good deal of courage, once he's motivated by something or someone he cares about.
Barge Reactions:
The Barge will be fascinating for him. So many aliens and monsters and robots! However, once he figures out that Barge tech is illogical and bizarre he's likely to become more and more restless since he'll feel like he's being kept away from his true destiny as an evilengineer scientist. This might lead to some desperate actions. The barge is a far, far nicer place than Malaria and he might find a measure of respect there but Igor still will feel the need to prove he's not just "an Igor."
Underneath all the talk about evil, Igor's a fairly kind person. Sensitive, even, when he actually takes notice of people. Positive CR shouldn't be that much of a problem. He'll take most odd reactions to himself calmly. It's okay! His brain is the important part. He'll show them what he can do, he'll show them all, etc. etc. The only thing that will trigger berserker rage is being thwarted in a long-term project. Even then that anger's likely to be short lived.
Path to Redemption: In the movie, simply making friends/falling in love with Eva and realizing that he truly doesn't want to get ahead by stepping on people is enough to get through to him eventually.
However, his problems are bigger than simply needing to realize he doesn't want to be evil. Some kind of Ethics 101 or even just encouragement to think beyond a superficial level would be essential. He badly needs to learn to think things through. Even if he chooses to go through with ethically dubious projects for science he needs to do it with an awareness of what he's doing. He needs to have considered the risks.
Wardens will need to provide positive reinforcement and maybe some glimpse of the realities of war and terrorism. They need to offer a vision of some worthwhile pathway to respect not based on making everyone around you fear you. That vision doesn't even have to directly apply to Igor's life, he simply needs to see that success doesn't have to depend on trampling people.
History: Malaria was once a sunny nation of farmers until the permanent cloud cover came and wiped out the crops. The whole island turned to terrorism and blackmail simply to survive. The government offered evil weapons manufacturers prestige and free castles. By the time Igor was born there was already a slave caste of hunchbacked lab assistants in place.
It seems likely that Igor had parents or caregivers that cared about and encouraged him. In any case, at a young age he had the dream of becoming an evil scientist. After finishing Igor school (where he graduated with a Yes Master's Degree) he tried to find employment for a while, eventually getting placement with the D-grade scientist Dr. Glickenstein. Glickenstein was abusive but also kind of pitiful. Igor worked on some of his own projects behind Glickenstein's back: a not-so-bright brain in a jar and an immortal rabbit.
When Dr. Glickenstein insisted on using the wrong size tool, Igor ended up letting him use it. Unfortunately, in this AU the resulting explosion meant death not only for Glickenstein but for Igor as well.
